On its introduction the 105bhp Wankel engine was a revelation; it pulled smoothly, the handling was agile and it had good looks. Power was boosted in 1981 to115bhp which Vic Elford increased with the addition of a turbo. The second generation models were introduced in 1986 with changes to the body and the redesigned engine now developed 148bhp. A couple of years later the Mazda Turbo had 200bhp and also the option of a convertible body. The normally aspirated cars ceased in 1989 with the Turbo remaining until 1992.
