The redesigned, tenth-generation Corolla arrives with a new platform, a choice of two new engines, a reworked suspension, and more. A few centimetres wider but otherwise unchanged in dimensions, the new Corolla is 100 kg to 170 kg heavier, depending on the version. The Corolla is offered in CE, LE, Sport and XRS trim levels The new, 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine develops 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque and struggles to power the vehicle. Acceleration and pickup are lacklustre, despite an extra six horsepower and six more pound-feet of torque. The engine lacks responsiveness under 3,000 rpm, forcing you to downshift to resume speed even if you slow down just a bit. The increase in power and torque doesn’t seem to make up for the increase in weight. This engine meets Tier2/Bin5 emissions control standards. The five-speed manual gearbox is easy to shift, but we’ve seen better. The transmission is well geared except for fifth, which should run the engine a few hundred rpm lower.
